Medications that make you helpless and psychotic for nursing students

A few times, I have heard doctors and R.N.s talking about a drug they were given in nursing or medical school that makes them helpless and causes schizzophrenic symptoms and they are required to take this as a part of their schooling just to learn what a helpless patient goes through.

I have never learned WHAT THIS DRUG IS or why it would be safe to just give it to everyone in a whole class or even if they really do this in every nursing program.

If there really is such a thing and it's safe, then why don't more people have a chance to use it since so many of them have no empathy or insights into the lives of disoriented people?

Why should you have to be a nursing or medical student to do this? They should give it to anyone who likes to torment helpless individuals so they can learn deeper insights. They should pass it out to high school students.

Can anyone clear up my confusion.
I never had such a drug given to me or fellow classmates at nursing school. I would not even accept such a thing. We got our learning experience hands on working and caring for the pysh patients. You can care for them, have understanding, and empathy for them without drugging oneself.

I'm sorry but I have never, ever heard of this. Unless this is some wacky, 1960's practice that went along with the times of performing frontal lombotomies (sp) on the mentally ill, I think those people may have been pulling your leg. Either way, I hope you get a clear answer

Couldn't agree more with first poster.. I was never given any medication in nursing school.

Wow...that's the best new nursing student scare rumor I've heard yet. Its right up there with doing nude physical assessments on other students.

I think someone was putting you on..I had an inservice years ago in which we put on eyeglasses smeared with vaseline, dried corn kernels in our shoes and some other things I can't remember now ---this gave us an idea of what our residents felt ...

Ethanol can have those effects in high enough doses, and many med/nursing students are exposed to ethanol at some point in their studies.

You don't need a drug to do this. Nursing school can make you feel psychotic and helpless enough without meds!
