Just get out of nursing already

5 Ok so lately I've been reading several posts of nurses that are just really tired of nursing. With all due respect, why don't you leave nursing already if it causes you this most heartache? Yes you have bills, need insurance, have kids, and may be the sole provider... however what is all of of this if you don't have your sanity. What is the paycheck worth if you are completly miserable. Yes I am a nurse and have my good days and bad days. However, I don't see myself doing anything else outside of nursing.

I would encourage any nurse to stay in nursing and find their ninche. If you have lost your love for nursing reflect on what originally drew you to nursing. Try to ignite the passion again. If all else fails... goodbye, idios, see you later !

The only problem I have with nursing is the schedule. I hate working holidays! I love the unit I work on and I love the patients. I work part-time but always seem to work holidays..maybe I should consider PRN. Overall, I do love nursing though.

I completely understand and agree with your point. I just hope most of these complaints are just venting and they don't take it to work with them???? Sometimes it is good to just vent here, let it all out, and then it is out of your system.

NurseLoveJoy88 you have touched on some of the reasons why some continue any job ( including Nursing ) long after the passion has gone , but once you have the needs for that paycheck that resposibility for dependants brings you , it is not so easy always to do what is best for yourself ie. find another job .Many would probably look for another job if they only had themselves to consider , but yhere is also the inertia that comes about because however bad they feel the job is , it is familiar , or they don't want to uproot from their support system and there is no gaurantee that a new job will be better than their present job etc..

No flaming from me...I honestly believe most nurses went into the field with the misguided assumption that nurses make great money. Only to find out its just not true. I tell people what kind of work I do and they think I am rich ...maybe if I did not have a house full of kids and tons of bills, that would be the case. I hear a lot of complaints from my co-workers and I tell them to buck up or quit. I know too many other aides or nurses that would just love to take their job!!

I'd like to agree with you but it's easier said than done. Most people can't survive without their paycheck so food and shelter have to come before their happiness. Going back to school for a new career is money and time taken away from families and many people can't afford to do that unfortunately.

With all respect due to 1-year veteran of the profession, give it a few years. I wish I knew now what I thought I knew at 21. You may be singing quite a different tune in five or ten years.

The beauty of a career in nursing is you are not limited to a single type of job. I have been in nursing in some form starting out as a nurse tech for 20 years now. I have been an RN for 17 of those 20 years, and an NP for the past 4 years. I have worked in hospitals (ICU, ER, Med-Surg and NICU) home health, management, and worked as an industry consultant for a major advertising agency. I have done consulting for an electronic medical record company, and worked agency. I also did case management for an insurance company for a couple of years when my family needed me on more of a 9-5 no weekends and no holidays schedule. If you aren't happy where you are, get creative and find someplace where you will be happy. I am in family practice now as an NP and honestly, I don't see ever doing anything else. I love it, it just took me longer than I thought it would to get here. Everybody is suited to different things, if med-surg (or whatever) isn't your thing there are thousands of other avenues to choose from, and the opportunities are endless. I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat.

Gotcha!Imma get busy finding my ninche. I'll bet it's fallen behind the microwave again.
