Well - if the population is about 600,000 and there were 150 murders that means 599,850 were not murdered. I used to live there and worked downtown. You have to take precautions, just like any other large city, but I never felt threatened.

I bet you've been watching The First 48 haven't you lol? Yeah I agree with classicdame, it's just like any other large city in that you have good areas and bad areas. Before making the move I would suggest talking to someone who lives there to get advice on areas to live in, but I would suggest that for any new city you move to you are unfamiliar with.

My family is from the north Mississippi area and many of them live in Memphis. Have done so for years and years. I think you would be as safe in Memphis as you would be in any other town around that size. There are many things to do in Memphis and a lot of nice areas to live that are within decent driving distance of Memphis. If you are an Elvis Presley or blues fan you will love it!Before you make your decision drive around the area around the school you want to attend.

Am I the only one who finds this post a little offensive? Not trying to flame, OP, but why on earth wouldn't Memphis be safe? Because it's in the south? And how does anyone here give an answer to such a broad question? Is it safe to go to school anywhere? (Rhetorical question used for example)How does one judge an entire city as safe or not safe? And why ask the question? Is there something about Memphis specifically or is it the entire state of Tennessee that worries you?

Huh, maybe I'm the only one, but...I read the question as, "How is the job market in Memphis...if I started nursing school there, would there be a job for me in 2/4/X # of years?" Is it a safe place to make an investment in the future?Which is a little bit of a more appropriate question to ask on a nursing forum...but maybe a psychic forum would be better.

Quote from roser13Hadn't thought of that. Hope you're right, but apparently the other responders also understood the question to mean "safety" with regard to crime statistics..

It sounds like OP was wondering about physical safety... Memphis is known for being dangerous but so are most cities... all of my family lived in Detroit for many years and lots of them still do live there and while Detroit is notorious for crime, they're all still breathing. As long as you are able to stay safe (i.e. don't walk down the street in a bad area by yourself at 3 in the morning) I think you should be fine!

Beware of nursing instructors dressed as Elvis impersonators.
